Each module contains training on physical examination techniques pertaining to the specialty being presented. Red flag cases for referral are especially emphasized and reviewed together. Each attendee receives a detailed, illustrated booklet containing all lecture notes and references used in the module. All lectures are given in PowerPoint format, with class discussions and break-out sessions for analyzing actual clinical scenarios based on real cases.

Pulmonary Medicine April 17th & 18th:

The lungs provide for us the breath of life. They must function properly for good health, and yet this system is the most commonly infected in the body, as we breathe in such large quantities of bacteria, viruses, and toxic substances from the environment. Cancer of the lungs is the most common cancer in America and the greatest single killer. Understanding the material covered in this course is of vital concern to every TCM practitioner.

Neurology for TCM Practitioners May 22nd & 23rd:

Neurological problems are a core concern of TCM practitioners, who need to know the western medical paradigm for understanding all of these debilitating diseases. This neurology course is taught on an advance level and covers all the degenerative disorders of the nervous system, cancer, and common problems such as headaches, dizziness and dementia disorders.

Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Renal Disorders June 19th & 20th:

Endocrine disorders are among the most frequent seen in TCM practices, especially diabetes mellitus and the devastating complications it causes in the body when it is not well controlled. Thyroid problems are also very common. We will study all the endocrine disorders in detail. Also in this seminar we will cover the kidney and the urinary tract and their disorders, including a discussion on dialysis and kidney transplantation.

Women’s Health, Pregnancy, and Infertility July 17th & 18th:

Breast disease is one of the most common and potentially dangerous problems seen in both medical and TCM practice, as cancer of the breast is the most common cause of malignancy in women and one of the leading causes of death. Female health problems present a unique challenge to practitioners that are often complex. This module covers all major female health problems as well as infertility and pregnancy.

Gastroenterology, Liver and Pancreatic Disorders August 14th & 15th:

Gastrointestinal complaints compete with headaches and low back pain as the most common problems seen in both western medical offices and also TCM clinics in America. An advanced knowledge of these problems is essential for the well-training TCM practitioner, as well as the ability to recognize and refer patients with acute abdominal emergencies that may become life-threatening if not properly treated. We will discuss cancer of all the different portions of the GI tract, which are also extremely common and often lethal if not recognized early.

Musculoskeletal Disorders and Orthopedics September 11th & 12th:

More people come to see acupuncturists because of these kinds of problems than any others. The skeletal muscles are our only link to the world we live in. It is by using these muscles, including those of vision and speech, that we take in the world and then communicate back to others. The human hand, unique in all nature, functions like an end organ to the brain and enables us to survive. Diseases of this system are of critical importance. This course is an intensive study of the musculoskeletal system.

Immunology and Dermatology October 9th & 10th:

The immune system and its disorders are discussed in this module. Diseases of this system are among the most common seen in TCM practices. Allergies are widespread among children and adults in our population, and toxic exposure is a continual hazard. We will explore how this modern day risk may contribute to many serious medical problems such as cancer, Alzheimer’s Disease and even autism. Also, one of the most common sets of problems seen in the busy medical clinic relates to skin disorders. The skin is the largest organ in the human body, and many skin problems are related to immune system problems. Malignant melanoma skin cancer is one of the most lethal cancers.

Cardiology and Vascular Disease November 13th & 14th:

The heart is obviously one of the most important organs in the body, and its continual good health is the most vital aspect of our lives. One-half of those who die of sudden heart attacks have no previous heart symptoms or other warnings, so good cardiac health is essential for us, our families, and our patients. In this module we will study how to examine the heart and spot trouble before it becomes more severe, as well as how to promote good cardiac health and treat heart problems. We will also cover vascular diseases of veins, arteries, and the lymphatic system.

Geriatrics and Gerontology December 11th & 12th:

The elderly are the most common patients seen in many TCM practitioners’ offices today, and this percentage will steadily increase in the future as the baby boomers continue to age. This people are different in their medical responses and in the way they are treated. The special needs of this group of patients must be studied on its own, and every TCM practitioner should take this course. Inadequacies or mistakes in the way we treat the elderly are unfortunate, tragic, and yet avoidable.

Cancer January 8th & 9th (2011):

Cancer is one of the greatest killers there is, and also a cause of much human suffering. We will discuss what cancer is; what types there are; the causes of cancer; the psychobiology of cancer. We will also cover the cytology and genetics of cancer; the epidemiology of cancer; diagnosing cancer; staging cancer; and other things in general to know about these often fatal diseases. We’ll discuss what you and I can do to greatly reduce our chances of getting cancer. We will cover all the major cancers of the body and discuss their Western medical treatment as well as how to integrate this treatment with Oriental medicine.
